One of Those Nights
2003-11-10 @ 9:01 a.m.

Tonight was one of those nights, you know, when the rain poured outside our car windows, and the rearview was specked with dots of water dancing across a cracked glass. Ahead there was nothing but the swishing of the windshield wipers getting rid of the excess rain. What's wrong with an excess? We're a greedy people -more is always better.

Tonight was one of those nights, you know, when we pretend to be philosophers. We question what is and what was and what will be, because dark skies make us feel reflective. Plato, Socrates, they ain't got nothin' on us, so I'll numb you with my what if's, and I'll converse with the rain pelting against my window.

Tonight was one of those nights, you know, when slick roadways made fast-moving cars swerve. As it spun out of control, you lost control, and no stopping seemed to come. The breaks are dead and we seem to be, too.

Tonight was one of those nights, you know, when on the morning news the next day you heard of a group of kids getting killed on their way to or from a party or rave or concert. It was one of those days when parents and families and friends cried. When people lie about the accomplishments we've made, and suddenly enemies become friends, too.

Tonight was one of those nights, you know, the kind of nights that bring us tragedy. When control is lost, hope is lost, and a bunch of lost kids lose themselves again -just in a different context.

Tonight was tonight. I'll never forget it.
